Results Summary for the
Five Most Recent Price Comparison Surveys.

All surveys were conducted by HAFM staff,
at the Long Beach Downtown Farmers Market and five major supermarkets in the Long Beach area.

Comparison Method:

  • A list of about 100 common vegetables, fruits, nuts and eggs was chosen.
  • Five Long Beach area stores were chosen based on geographic distribution and customer diversity.
  • On a Friday, the prices at the Long Beach Downtown Farmers Market were noted and averaged for each item.
  • The same was done the next day at the stores.
  • The averaged prices of all comparable items were then added, thus producing a shopping basket total for the averaged stores and for the Farmers Market, and conclusively expressed in Total Percent Savings at HAFM.
  • The table below shows clearly that prices at our certified farmers' markets are consistently
    and significantly cheaper than supermarkets.
    Each survey averaged:
about 75 items actually available for comparison from the 100-plus list,
several dozen or more occurrences of supermarket items on special,
and about 15 items not available at HAFM.
